VDSL Splitter

VDSL Splitter

Currently, the world of broadband communications has two predominant camps: ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line, usually referred to merely as “DSL”) and cable modems. Each of these options provides speeds much greater than a dial-up modem, and each of these can be used in the home or in a small business. But just as computer processors keep getting faster and faster, so have high-speed internet connections.

Many feel that the next generation of high-speed internet is VDSL, or “very high speed DSL.” VDSL operates similarly to DSL, in that the signal is only viable within a limited distance from the source, and that this signal can be transmitted using existing copper wiring. Indeed, one of the drawbacks of DSL is the issue of distance: if a potential subscriber lives too far from the originating signal, the service will not be available.

However, many telephone companies are bringing FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood), and installing (or planning to install) Optical Network Units (or ONUs) locally, thereby eliminating the distance hurdle. As this becomes a reality, VDSL will be available in more and more areas, and potentially more areas than DSL.

VDSL Splitters Allow Phone and Data on One Line

Also just like ADSL, VDSL allows both regular telephony and data transmission on the same line. This means that telephone service will remain uninterrupted, even if you maintain continuous connections to the Internet. The device that makes this possible is a splitter. A splitter will reassemble signals from multiple sources (say, telephone and data) into a single signal.
